000 - NON-ASSIGNABLE

Non-assignable areas are those types of space that are necessary for the general use and operation of a building but are not assigned to any organizational unit. Generally, departmental-level users should not be entering non-assignable spaces into the database.

010 Custodial Areas

011 Shipping-Receiving Room

Definition: A room used for the transit of materials and supplies into or out of a building.

Description: Include rooms or areas used for receiving materials, equipment, or supplies for distribution to other parts of the building or for shipping to other places.

Limitations: Do not include rooms classified as storage, warehouse, stockroom, etc., which are used for the storage of supplies and materials.

012 Janitorial

Definition: Room(s) used for the servicing of a building.

Description: Janitorial area is the area of all spaces on all floors of a building used for building protection, care, maintenance and operation. Include such rooms as janitors' closets and maintenance storerooms.

020 Circulation Areas

021 Hall or Corridor

Definition: An interior passageway, generally defined by walls, onto which rooms open.

Description: Halls or corridors should include all circulation spaces well defined either by walls or partitions, provided they are used for general access.

Limitations: Circulation paths necessary for movement within large, open office areas should not be coded as halls or corridors, but should be included in the office's program space.

022 Elevator

Definition: An elevator car used for transportation of freight or passengers from floor to floor. Include same square footage at each floor level.

023 Lobby

Definition: An area used for general circulation and access to other parts of a building.

Description: Include areas that typically are located with the entrance to a building. The area may include some type of benches or seating.

024 Stairs

Definition: The area leading from one floor level to another by means of steps. (Include all horizontal areas at each floor level.)

025 Vestibule

Definition: A small area or room between doors leading into a building or into a room or set of rooms within a building.

Description: Include such areas as a building's enclosed entrance that consists of two sets of doors or an area which serves as an entrance to another area.

026 Ramp

Definition: An inclined passageway or corridor of slope built to Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Description: Includes only those spaces that are clearly part of a building's internal circulation plan or are required by accessibility standards to provide barrier-free access to a space.

031 Mechanical-Electrical Room

Definition: That portion of a building designed to house mechanical equipment and utility services.

Description: Mechanical areas should include such spaces as air-duct shafts, boiler rooms, fixed mechanical and electrical equipment rooms, fuel rooms, mechanical service shafts, meter and communications closets, etc.

Limitations: Do not include central utility plant facilities (Type 033).

032 Restroom

Definition: All non-private toilet facilities.

Description: Include all toilet areas open to the general public or for general use of the building occupants.

Limitations: Do not include restrooms or toilet rooms adjoining private offices, those designated specifically for research subjects, clinic clients, of health care patients, or those that are part of residence hall student rooms; these should be coded as Related Service "Toilet Room/Shower Room (86)", with the appropriate Type Code (e.g., 319, 259, 549, 899, etc.)

033 Central Utility Plant

Definition: A building or portion of a building designed to house central heating plants and other central utility functions (chillers, boilers, electrical generators, etc.) housed in buildings or rooms that are a part of the central utility system of the institution.

Limitations: Do not include mechanical/electrical areas which service individual buildings and/or rooms and which are not part of the central (campus wide) utility system (see code 031).

034 Elevator Equipment Room

Definition: A room containing mechanical equipment related to the operation of a building elevator.

Definition: Those rooms in the process of conversion, completion, or reassignment and not available for use at the time of the space survey. Also may be used for permanently inactive spaces for reasons such as inaccessibility (under 3' in height), non-load- bearing attic spaces, etc.

100 - CLASSROOM FACILITIES

110 Classrooms

111 Classroom

Definition: A room used for formally scheduled class meetings, is subject to regular assignment by the Registrar and/or academic unit, and does not require special-purpose equipment that renders the room unsuitable for use by other areas of study.

Description: Include rooms used for scheduled instruction usually referred to as general purpose classrooms, lecture rooms, and lecture-demonstration rooms which are equipped with tablet arm chairs, tables and chairs, or similar types of seating. Also included are instructional rooms scheduled by departments, as well as those controlled jointly with the Registrar. Also included are classrooms that may contain multimedia or telecommunications equipment or are furnished with special equipment appropriate to a specific area of study if the equipment does not render the room unsuitable for use by classes in other areas of study. This category may include classrooms that have been set aside for a specific non-credit program.

Limitations: This category does not include conference rooms (Type 351), class laboratories (Type 211), or auditoriums (Type 611) used for other than instructional purposes.

112 Seminar Room

Definition: A room normally equipped with a table and chairs that is subject to regular assignment by the Registrar and/or academic department.

Description: Although seminar rooms are similar to classrooms, they are generally smaller, equipped with table and chairs, and scheduled for small, seminar type classes.

Limitations: A room usually scheduled for seminars would not necessarily indicate it should be classified as a Seminar Room if it is equipped in the normal classroom manner.

Definition: A room that directly serves a classroom or seminar room as an extension of the activities of those areas.

Description: Include such areas as projection booths, closets, preparation rooms, stockrooms, etc., if they serve a classroom or seminar room.

210 Class Laboratories

211 Class Laboratory

Definition: A room used by regularly scheduled classes requiring special-purpose equipment for student participation, experimentation, observation, or practice in a particular field of study.

Description: A class laboratory is designed and/or furnished with specialized equipment to serve the needs of a particular area of study for group instruction in regularly scheduled classes. The design and/or equipment in such a room normally precludes its use for other areas of study. Included in this category are rooms generally referred to as teaching laboratories, instructional shops, band rooms, choral rooms, (group) music practice rooms, language laboratories, (group) studios, and similar specially designed and/or equipped rooms IF they are used primarily for group instruction in regularly scheduled classes.

Limitations: This category does not include laboratory rooms serving as individual (or independent) study rooms. It does NOT include laboratories used for informally or irregularly scheduled group instruction. This category does NOT include rooms generally referred to as research laboratories. It does NOT include gymnasiums, swimming pools, drill halls, laboratory schools, teaching clinics, demonstration houses and similar facilities.

219 Class Laboratory Facilities Support

Definition: A room that directly serves a class laboratory as an extension of the activities of the class laboratory.

Description: Include such rooms as environmental control rooms (069), stockrooms (088), darkrooms (078), preparation rooms (079), etc., that serve a class laboratory.

221 Open Laboratory

Definition: A room used primarily for individual or group instruction that is informally (or irregularly) scheduled.

Description: A room designed and/or furnished with specialized equipment used by informally or irregularly scheduled classes requiring special-purpose equipment for student participation, experimentation, observation, or practice in a particular field of study. The design and/or equipment in such a room normally precludes its use for other areas of study. Open laboratories typically (but not necessarily or exclusively) include such rooms as language laboratories, (group) music practice rooms, or (group) studios that are not regularly scheduled.

Limitations: This category does not include class laboratories (Type 211), individual study laboratories (Type Category 230), or non-class laboratories (Type Category 250). It does NOT include athletic activity areas such as gymnasiums (see Type 521), swimming pools (Type 522), teaching clinics (Type Category 540), and similar facilities.

222 Audio-Visual Studio/Media Room

Definition: A room scheduled by appointment, furnished with classroom type seating and providing loud speakers and playback equipment for group listening of recorded material and/or projection equipment for viewing of films.

Description:  Include rooms usually under the control of the Library's Center for Media and Educational Technology and which generally are scheduled by academic departments for showing films or listening to recorded materials.  May also be used to describe athletic media rooms for athletic game review and study by coaches and student athletes.

Limitations: Exclude rooms equipped for individual listening (Type 413).

Definition: A room directly serving an Open Laboratory (Type 221) or an Audio-Visual Studio (Type 222) as an extension of the activities such facilities.

Description: Include rooms that serve Open Laboratories such as computer-related rooms (052), audio control rooms (060), or preparation rooms (079).

231 Individual Study Laboratory

Definition: A room especially equipped and/or designed for individual student experimentation, observation, practice, or study in a particular field of study.

Description: Include rooms (which may have multiple stations) that serve a particular subject matter area. These rooms, which may have multiple stations, are normally assigned to individuals for their own use.

Limitations: This category does not include individual study facilities intended for general study purposes.

232 Student Practice Room

Definition: A specially equipped or designed room for group or individual student experimentation, observation, or practice in a particular field of study.

Description: Include music studios, speech practice rooms, small rooms used for practice by individual students or very small groups (a large room used for instruction of and practice by a group such as a band, orchestra, ensemble, etc., is usually classified as a class laboratory). This type of space generally is not assigned to any particular individual.

Limitations: A music studio assigned to a faculty member that serves as a combination faculty office and music studio should be classified as Faculty Office (Type 312). This category does not include music studios that generally are larger than the music practice room and are designed to accommodate several persons at one time.

Definition: A room that directly serves an Individual Study Laboratory or a student practice room(s) as an extension of the activities in such a facility.

Limitations: This category does not include rooms that serve study facilities in the library (Type Category 400 - Study Facilities).

251 Non-Class Laboratory

Definition: A room used for laboratory applications, research, or training in research methodology that require special purpose equipment for staff or student experimentation or observation.

Description: Included in this category are rooms generally referred to as research laboratories. These rooms are designed and equipped for faculty, staff, and students for the conduct of research and controlled or structured creative activities. These activities may include experimentation, application, observation, composition, or research training in a structured environment directed by one or more faculty or principal investigator(s). These activities are generally confined to faculty, staff, and graduate employees and are applicable to any academic discipline. This category includes labs that are used for experiments or "dry runs" in support of both instructional and research activities.

Limitations: This category does not include rooms referred to as Class Laboratory (Type 211), Open Laboratory (Type 221), and Individual Study Laboratories (Types 231, 232).

252 Electron Microscope Room

Definition: A room used for laboratory applications, research, or training in research methodologies that require an electron microscope and related equipment for staff or student experimentation or observation.

Description: Included are rooms containing any electron-optical instrument.

Limitations: Do not include rooms that contain only light-optical or other imaging devices.

Definition: A room directly serving a Non-Class Laboratory as an extension of the activities of the Non-Class Laboratory.

Description: Include computer rooms (052), stockrooms (088), animal quarters (051), environmental control rooms (059), etc., which serve a Non-Class Laboratory.

300 - OFFICE FACILITIES

310 Offices

310 Designated Department Head Office

Definition: A room used by department heads specifically for the performance of departmental administrative duties within an academic department.

Description: These particular offices are dedicated solely for the department head's performance of the duties of that position and generally are sited within the department's main office complex.

Limitations: Do not include offices of other executive-level personnel. Do not include a faculty office (Type 312) if the faculty member is serving as a department head but does not have another office designated specifically for that function.

311 Administrative Office

Definition: A room used by administrative personnel for the performance of administrative duties.

Description: Include rooms generally referred to as the offices of presidents, all deans, associate and assistant deans, registrars, directors, and other officers of administration.

Limitations: Do not include classified offices (see type 313) or other general office space.

312 Faculty Office

Definition: A room assigned to a faculty member for the performance of duties other than the meeting of classes.

Description: Include all offices used by faculty, excluding heads of instructional departments (see Type 310). Included are associate and assistant deans budgeted to other than instruction and serving a portion of the institution, instructors, adjunct instructors, emeriti, visiting and courtesy faculty appointments, and post doctorate fellows for instructional or research purposes, instructional preparation, counseling, etc. A studio in the departments of music or fine arts assigned to one or more faculty members for their own work even though occasionally used for a student lesson should be classified as a faculty office.

313 Staff Office

Definition: An office used by classified staff personnel in the performance of their regularly assigned duties.

Description: Include rooms generally occupied by classified personnel including clerical, receptionist, or temporary personnel in similar positions. Include in this category space where any general office machines or files are in the same room with clerical personnel and where such space is incidental to the office function.

Limitations: Large rooms such as reception areas, shops, open laboratories, etc., that have a desk for a technician or staff member are coded according to the primary purpose of the room rather than a staff office. The office portion may be prorated out if desired. In large open-office areas, circulation space that functions as an integral part of the room is to be reported as part of the room, not prorated out as non-assignable circulation space.

314 Graduate Employee Office

Definition: An office or portion of an office used by employed graduate students for the performance of duties other than the meeting of classes.

Description:  Include all office space occupied by employed graduate students, who assist with research, teaching, administrative functions, or other like classifications.

Limitations: This category does not include a work space within a laboratory if that work space is NOT separated by walls from the laboratory space. In such a case, the work space is included as part of the laboratory itself. This category also does not include space for non-employed graduate students or other paid or non-paid student workers (see Type 316).

315 Researcher Office

Definition: An office or portion of an office used by a research associate or research assistant.

Description: Include all office space occupied by employees who have the title of Research Associate, Research Assistant, Post-Doctoral Researcher, etc.

Limitations: This category does not include a work space within a laboratory if that work space is NOT separated by walls from the laboratory space. In such a case, the work space is included as part of the laboratory itself.

316 Student Office

Definition: An office or portion of an office used by non-employed graduate students or other paid or non-paid students who require office space.

Description: Include spaces for non-employed graduate and undergraduate students or other paid or non-paid student workers (including undergraduates, post-baccalaureates, and non-system students) who require or have been assigned office space as a result of a practicum, traineeship, internship, mentorship, etc.

Limitations: Offices that are occupied by graduate student employees would be classified as Graduate Student Office (see Type 314).

319 Office Facilities Support

Definition: A room serving an office (or group of offices) as an extension of the activities in an office or offices.

Description: Include workrooms, file rooms, vaults, closets, break rooms, private toilets, records rooms, office supply rooms, and waiting-reception areas, etc.

Limitations: This classification does not include campus-wide central photocopy and printing shops, which should be classified as Shop Facilities (see Type Category 720).

351 Conference Room

Definition: A room serving an office complex and used primarily for staff meetings and departmental activities other than instructional activities.

Description: A conference room generally is equipped with a table and chairs, lounge-type furniture, or straight-back chairs. It typically (but not necessarily) is assigned to specific departments for its use. It is intended primarily for formal gatherings as contrasted with a lounge, which is intended for relaxation and casual interaction.

Limitations: Conference rooms are distinguished from seminar rooms on the basis of primary useÑa room with tables and chairs used primarily for meetings as opposed to classes regularly scheduled by the Registrar. Also, do not include general purpose meeting rooms (see Type 681).

Definition: A room directly serving a Conference Room as an extension of the activities of that function.

Description: Include rooms such as chair storage rooms, projection rooms, etc.

411 Reading/Resource Room

Definition: A resource room or area used for independent study, reading, or student research, usually with multiple computer stations, and with or without shelves around the walls. It may include provision for incidental or secondary storage or circulation and use of books, documents, and other reference and resource materials either in paper or digital form.

Description: Included in this category are general reading, resource, and study rooms, and periodical reading rooms. Also included are the prorated spaces occupied by study stations located within library open stacks. Reading rooms may be furnished with computers, tables, and chairs, individual study desks and chairs (which may provide locked storage), or lounge-type chairs. Aisle space that functions as an integral part of the room is to be reported as part of the room, not prorated out as unassigned circulation space. This classification may apply to departmental space as well as to the library.

Definition: A small room in the library designed for one or two individuals, generally located near the library stacks. Study rooms often are assigned for a specified period of time to faculty members or graduate students.

Description: Also can be used to designate miscellaneous small study areas such as seating alcoves within larger open areas.

Limitations: Individual study desks, which may or may not provide locked storage and are located in open stacks or open reading rooms, are excluded from this category and should be classified as Reading/Resource Room (Type 411).

Definition: A room furnished with audio equipment for individual listening.

Description: The rooms may be listening booths accommodating one or two individuals and equipped with loudspeakers or may accommodate several individuals using earphones at tables and chairs.

Definition: A room equipped with tables and chairs or desks and chairs, set aside (on an appointment basis) for the use of a group of students for study and informal discussion.

Limitations: Exclude non-book materials, such as Archives (Type 422), and books in the process of being catalogued in library processing rooms (see Type Category 440).

Limitations: This category does not include temporary or movable seating areas or (uncovered) seating areas in outdoor stadia.

These rooms have a clearly defined production or distribution function that serves a broader area (e.g., department, entire campus) than would a typical service room. These rooms are usually staffed and operated by personnel other than students.

Limitations: Do not include rooms that merely store media materials and equipment. Studios used primarily as part of an instructional program to train students in communication techniques should be classified as Class Laboratories (Type 211, if scheduled) or Open Laboratories (Type 221, if not scheduled).

Description: Clinic facilities are typically associated with such educational areas as psychology, speech and hearing, remedial reading, and remedial writing. However, this type of room also may be associated with a research/non-class laboratory in such fields as linguistics or psychology; in such a case, it would be coded as Type 259 Non-Class Laboratory Facilities Support/Related Service 541.

Limitations: This category does not include clinics associated with student health care. It does not include clinics for the medical or dental treatment of humans or animals.

542 Consultation Room

Definition: A room used for meetings and interviews between the staff of the clinic and those using the clinic facilities.

Description: Include in this category rooms in which a staff member interviews patients and/or relatives concerning treatment, training, progress, etc., of the patient or client. However, this type of room also may be associated with a research/non-class laboratory in such fields as linguistics or psychology; in such a case, it would be coded as Type 259/Related Service 542.

Limitations: Do NOT include rooms used for testing, evaluating, etc. (see Type 541).

Limitations: Greenhouse areas physically attached or are part of another building and serving an academic or research function in the building would be coded as a Greenhouse but classified as a Related Service area for the type of space served (e.g., 219/581 or 259/581).

Definition:  A room that is shielded from view and free from intrusion and that is set aside to provide a place, other than a bathroom, for use by nursing mothers who are university students or employees.

Limitations:  Excludes any room that is used exclusively but temporarily (about 1 year) as a lactation space for the special-case use of emplyees and is internal to a department (not for use by the general student body).  Such space may contine to be coded with the room's primary Type Code (e.g., conference room, office, etc.).

592 Interview/Advising Room - non Clinical

Definition: A room used primarily for interviews, consultation, or advising in a non-clinical setting.

Description: Include in this category rooms in which interviews, consultation, or advising take place (usually between a faculty or staff member and a student or other non-clinical individual). Potentially included would be rooms in Student Advising (or rooms used in academic schools and colleges), UOPD, Career Center etc., used for interviewing, consulting, or advising. This type also may be used as a Related Service code for Intercollegiate Athletics Security, for which it would be coded Type 529 Athletic Facilities Support/Related Service 592.

Limitations: Do not include rooms in clinic areas, which would be coded as either Speech, Hearing, Reading Room (Type 541) or Consultation Room (Type 542).

Definition: A category of last resort.

Description: This category should be used for areas that are a one-of-a-kind or special situation type of space. When Type 593 is used, a description ("name") of the space must be manually inserted in the Custom Type Description field. Current examples of "Other Special Use Facilities" being used are:
Type 593 KITCHENETTE (small kitchenette areas within departments)
Type 593 BIKE STORAGE (secure storage for building occupants)
Type 593 SEATING ALCOVE (e.g., hallway seating where students may gather)

Description: This category includes rooms with seating oriented toward some focal point generally referred to as theaters, auditoriums, concert halls, arenas, or pavilions. This category should include the seating areas, stage, orchestra pit, and aisles.

Limitations: These rooms are distinguished from lecture rooms on the basis of primary use. As previously indicated under Classroom (Type 111), if the seating is regularly used for scheduled class meetings it should be classified as instructional space.

619 Assembly Facilities Support

Definition: A room that directly serves an assembly facility as an extension of the activities of such a facility.

Description: This category includes checkrooms (053), dressing rooms (057), projection booths (081), property storage (089) control rooms (060), etc.

Limitations: Entrance lobbies and other circulation areas surrounding or adjacent to the outside of the primary assembly room are non-assigned spaces classified as circulation. Associated concession stands should be coded Type 663.

Definition: A room used for exhibits and displays of works of art, artifacts, etc.

Description: This category includes museums, art galleries, and similar exhibition areas used to display materials and items for viewing by both the institutional population and the public.

Limitations: Study collections not primarily for general exhibition such as departmental displays of anthropological, botanical, or geological specimens should be classified under an appropriate category associated with that exhibition facility (Type 622).

622 Departmental Specimen Collection

Definition: A room for the orderly, ongoing collection of specimens used by an academic department to actively support its teaching, research, or public service.

Description: The space contains shelving or other facilities for storing specimens. The space is essentially a permanent working museum or library of specimens (collection) for the use of the whole department. The specimens or collection may be made available to other departments or outside agencies. Access may be extended to the general public, but that is not the primary purpose of the collection. Include spaces housing extensive collections of plants, animals, rocks, soil samples, artifacts, etc.

Limitations: Research experimentation is NOT conducted in the room. Do not include spaces that house specimens in non-active long-term storage or those being kept only to conduct a research project. Do not include the housing for live animals kept for use in research.

Definition: A room in which a patron can get quick service consisting of easy to prepare or already prepared food.

Description: Included in this category are food facilities that serve light meals such as sandwiches, hamburgers, etc. Include both the food serving and seating areas as snack bar if they are located in the same room.

Limitations: This category is limited to facilities that are open to the student body and/or public at large. Do not include serving areas as part of snack bar if the serving area is physically separated from the seating area (Type 633). Definition: A room or group of rooms set aside by the university to provide day as a non-medical service to members of the university community.

This type of facility serves as a central service center for faculty, staff, and students, and possibly members of the community.

Limitations: Do not include in this category of space pre-school nurseries if the facilities support the training of college-level students.

Definition: A room that directly serves a primary activity room in a day care center as an extension of the activities in that room.

Description: Includes storage rooms (089), closets (054), kitchens (064), private or staff restrooms (086), and other typical service rooms that support a primary activity area.

Limitations: Restrooms designed for child training should be coded 641 Day Care Center whereas staff-only restrooms should be coded Type 649/Related Service 086. Staff office areas should be coded as office (within Type Category 300 - Office Facilities). Staff eating or break areas should be coded Type 649/Related Service 653, but eating or training areas for children are classified as primary activity areas (Type 641).

Definition: A room used for rest and relaxation, or one that functions as a "Green Room" for performers or presenters.

Description: Included are spaces in student unions or other non-residential buildings used for relaxation, informal meetings, etc., such as a Leona Tyler lounge in the Graduate School. A lounge typically is equipped with upholstered furniture, draperies, and carpeting. This Type Code also may be used to designate a Green Room, which accommodates performers or presenters not yet needed on stage; in this case, enter "Green Room" in the Custom Type Description field.

Limitations: A lounge-type area within a public rest room is non-assignable space and is not considered distinct from the restroom.  Lounge or "hearth" areas in residence halls are classified under Type Category 900 - Residential Facilities (see Type 924). Do not include large waiting areas used by patients in clinic or health care facilities (see Type 881).

Description: The data-center system may fill one or more rooms, which normally require a controlled environment. Generally, Data Centers are housed within a central computing center facility, although this Type Code may be used by a college, school, or other unit to provide data-center functions for a large user population. A Data Center used for multiple functions, such as instructional, research, and/or administrative computing, should be included in this category. (NOTE: The proration of facilities in this category to "instruction," research," "public service," "general administration," etc., can be accomplished by associating specific Functional Use Codes to this Type Code.)

Limitations: A computer facility used only for instruction should be classified as a class laboratory (see type 211). Computer systems and server rooms for department offices should be coded Type 319/Related Service 052 Computer-Related Room; for classrooms Type 119/052; for research labs Type 259/052, etc.

Definition: A room used for examinations, diagnosis, consultation, or treatment.

Description: Included are rooms used for radiology, fluoroscopy, angiography, physical and occupational therapy, dialysis, body (e.g., CAT, MRI, ultrasound) scanning, cardiac catheterization, pulmonary function and vascular testing, EEG, ECG, EMC, EMR, linear acceleration, dental examination, treatment, speech, hearing, and other similar activities. Also includes combined doctor’s office and treatment/examination clinic rooms.

In veterinary institutions, rooms commonly called isolation treatment, small or large animal treatment, small or large animal x-ray, etc., are included.

Limitations: Does not include rooms used for the more radically invasive treatment procedures of surgery (see Surgery-840). Treatment/Examination Room (851) diagnosis differs from Diagnostic Laboratory (861) testing and diagnosis in that the former requires the presence of the patient.

Definition: A room used primarily for physical or occupational therapy of patients in student health.

Definition: A space that directly serves a Treatment/Examination Clinic room as an extension of the activities in those spaces.

Limitations: Does not include service areas for diagnostic service laboratories (see Diagnostic Service Laboratory-861, Diagnostic Service Laboratory Support-869), which typically support the entire health care facility. Primary activity rooms that are used to deliver therapeutic and diagnostic treatment should be coded Treatment/Examination Clinic (851). Treatment, examination, or clinic waiting rooms are classified as Patient Waiting Room (881) facilities.

861 Diagnostic Laboratory

Definition: A space used to provide diagnostic support services to an entire health care facility.

Description: Includes pathology, pharmacy, autopsy, isotope rooms or labs, etc., providing such services as hematology, chemistry tissue, bacteriology, serology, blood bank, and basal metabolism. Also includes areas commonly termed “animal necropsy rooms” in veterinary institutions.

Support or service areas are those that support a major space Type such as classroom, laboratory, office, etc.  The support service provided by this area is an extension of the activities within the main room or space.   A Related Service code is used in conjunction with a Type Code ending in "9."  For example, a Workroom (Related Service 97) that serves an office complex would be coded as "Type 319 / Related Service 97." A workroom serving a research laboratory would be coded as "Type 259 / Related Service 97."

51 Animal Room

Definition: Rooms or aquaria space used for the housing and feeding of animals or fish.

Description: The rooms or spaces in this category would be those that are located in academic buildings and would normally be associated with a research facility. These rooms are limited to facilities that serve a particular space or lab.

Limitations: Do not include in this category kennels or other animal quarters (barns, sheep sheds, etc.) that are not located in academic buildings. Also, do not include in this category animal quarters that make animals available to the university (see Type 571 Animal Quarters).

Definition: A room that directly supports departmental or research laboratory computers.

86 Toilet Room/Shower Room

Definition: A room containing bathroom fixtures

Description:  Included in this category are rooms generally referred to as shower rooms, washrooms, toilet rooms, etc.  Also included are the private restrooms within the sleep-study rooms in residence halls (Type 929/Related Service 086).

Limitations: Do not include public restrooms (see Type 032).

87 Sterilizing Room

Definition: A room housing autoclaves or other equipment used to sterilize or cleanse items such as surgical and other instruments or equipment and laboratory glassware and fixtures.

88 Stockroom

Definition: A room used to store supplies and materials.

Description: Included in this category are those rooms used as supply closets or serve a stores function. This type of space generally is limited to a departmental type storage area and one in which the materials stored are used on a day-to-day basis.

Limitations: This category does not include janitor closets or rooms used to store janitor supplies (see Type 012).

89 Storage, Non-Central

Definition: A departmental or non-centrally controlled room or facility used to store materials.

Description: Include in this category those storage areas for dead or permanent storage, as well as for materials that are used occasionally but should be close at hand.

Limitations: Do not include storage facilities that are used to keep office supplies or paper supplies, etc., that may be used on a day-to-day basis (088). Do not use with Type Category 700 - Support Facilities.

90 Trash-Garbage Room

Definition: A room, usually in a group residence facility, dedicated to the collection of trash or garbage to be held for central pickup.

Definition: A room designed and used to sell tickets to athletic, theater, or other types of events.

Definition: A room where tools are stored for safekeeping.

Description: Included in this category are rooms where tools are kept until they are needed and then checked back in for storage when no longer in use.

93 Training Room

Definition: A room using special equipment for the purpose of physical therapy and/or rehabilitation, especially in athletics.

Description: Included in this category are athletic treatment and examination rooms, hydrotherapy rooms, weight rooms, etc., used to strengthen, train, and diagnose and rehabilitate injuries in student athletes.

Definition: A room for safekeeping valuables, records, or money.

Description: Included in this category are those rooms that are specially constructed and may have special doors that once locked can be opened only with keys or a security code or by a timing mechanism.

Definition: A room or area with seating used by visitors while waiting to see someone (most often used with Type 319) or to participate in a laboratory study (generally Type 259).

Definition: A room or area containing vending machines for the use of faculty, staff, or students.

Description: This code will allow those building areas housing vending machines to be identified separately from other types of retail areas, if desired.

Definition: A room where various activities relating to the occupation or duties of institutional personnel are conducted.

98 X-Ray Room

Definition: A room equipped with X-ray equipment used for diagnostic or treatment functions (see types 859, 869, 899 Health Care Facilities and 529 Athletic Facilities).
